READ:
“How to Maintain Hope in an Age of Catastrophe,” Masha Gessen interviewing Robert Lifton
This is an interesting read in and of itself, but particularly interesting to read— especially given its elements of thought of an ilk with Arendt — alongside Gessen’s more recent piece in The New Yorker, “In the Shadow of the Holocaust.”
LISTEN:
Branford Marsalis, “Improvisation No. 3”
A really stunning saxophone improvisation, in which you can hear the space of the cathedral in the recording.
Akofa Akoussah, “I Tcho Tchass”
Caroline Polchak, “Last Days: Non Voglio Mai Vedere Il Sole Tramontare”
Masakatsu Takagi, Marginalia series
Takagi’s Marginalia series are some of the most beautiful pieces I’ve heard over the last few years. #65, #109, #108, and #48 are among my favourites.
Arvo Pärt, “Spiegel im Spiegel (Version for Violin and Piano)”
While I prefer the version recorded by Vladimir Spivakov and Sergej Bezrodny, this one is also beautiful. There’s something similar to a Satie Gymnopédie, almost.
Fairuz, “Wa Habibi”
Until next time,
